Now, Plasma Media Center on Desktop as well as Plasma Active!

Hi!
I know that all of you are excited to know the current status of Plasma Media Center. This blogpost is about various exciting features and improvements. For quick update, scroll to the end of page contains the video of PMC running on plasma Active on an ExoPC.

One of the great news is that PMC is now touch optimized. By seeing the current demand and use of tablets , we thought that it would be great if we make Plasma Media Center running on tablets too. With a discussion in IRC meeting (on #active), I took up the task of making PMC usable with Plasma Active.

Features Added recently:

  1. Option to display All Music, All Pictures, All Videos available in filesystem without browsing it. If the user doesn’t want to browse through the filesystem, he can use these options which show All Music/ Videos/ Pictures available in filesystem together in a single click. This is achieved by using Plasma Active datamodels which in turn use Nepomuk.
  2. Music has been categorised on the basis of Artist, Album, etc. So, now users can listen to their favourite artists songs at one place. Thanks to Vishesh Handa who helped to understand how to use Nepomuk queries.
  3. Now, user can control volume by clicking over volume icon in controller and changing the pop down slider value and seeking now works properly.

But we are not done yet, still lot of work to do (though its progress is little bit slow because only a couple of people are working on it). So, please give your precious feedback to improve it and to make Plasma Media Center rock.

Current Status of Plasma Media Center

Hi to all !
Happy to tell that Plasma Media Center has been improved a lot and have basic functionalities which is required in a mediacenter i.e Picture, Music and Video.

First of all when user open MediaCenter then welcome screen gets opened in full-screen (required) modes i.e picture, Music and Video. User can enter into any of these mode by clicking on the icons.

Suppose, User clicks on MusicBrowsing, now user can browse through his local filesystem and can play the selected song he wants and can continue browsing by using back button which is at top-left side of screen. At the bottom, in mediaInfoBar applet remaining time of media getting played is displayed.

Suppose user wants to switch to other mode, then he press back button and reaches back to its home directory. Now after pressing again back button, will reach back to home screen and switches to PictureBrowsing mode. Here, he can browse through the local filesystem and can view the Picture. Directory containig picture will show thumbnail of picture. User can view the picture by clicking on the picture.

User can also switch to videoBrowsing mode where he can watch the video he wanted to see in full screen mode.

These are the basic features which has been implemented yet. It still need a lot of improvement to make it more usable and beautiful.

Wiki page of mediacenter has been updated which is present at http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/Plasma/Plasma_Media_Center . It will help people to start contributing in Plamsa Media Center.

Status Update: Plasma MediaCenter

Hi everybody !

Sorry for writing blog after long time. Some details of what so far have been done in Plasma Media Center for which people are waiting smiley

Now, We have a dataengine named mediacentercontrol which updates and provides data to all applets which are connected through it e.g mediacontroller, mediaplayer, etc. There is a containment(Plasma Mediacenter Shell)  written in qml (thanks to my mentor Marco Martin) which holds all applet within at specified position and dimension. mediacontroller applet consists of different icons(play/pause, stop, seek), through which user can control the playing media.

mediaplayer applet which does the actual play, pause, seek, etc action requested by the user. Now only music and be played. As soon as Harald Sitter completes his work in phonon to play video using qml, will implement it in mediacenter.

mediabrowser applet which consists of three different mode i.e videos, music, pictures(now only music mode works and have to rewrite into qml). User can browse through the filesystem and can select the desired file. Snapshot showing browsing through the filesystem and at the sametime mediaplayer is playing music showing its progress in the slider.
